Ohio license plates have long touted the state as the “Birthplace of Aviation” in honor of Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Dayton brothers who built the world’s first successful airplane. But comic-book fans say the state has another very famous flier deserving of his own license plate. The Siegel & Shuster Society has started a campaign to get a special plate that credits Ohio for being the “Birthplace of Superman” and includes the superhero’s iconic “S” insignia. The society was formed four years ago to honor Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Cleveland duo who created Superman in the 1930s, board member Jamie Reigle said.Since then, the society has raised more than $100,000 to restore the house in the Cleveland neighborhood of Glenville where Superman was created; got three Cleveland streets renamed Jerry Siegel Lane, Joe Shuster Lane and Lois Lane; and helped install an Ohio Historical Society marker.“The license plate is another project for us,” Reigle said. The nonprofit group is collecting 500 names on petitions at comic book shops in several cities, and at Playhouse Square during showings of Batman, Superman and Spider-Man in August. (Signers must do so in person; there is no online option.)In addition to the signatures, the requesting organization must find a legislator who will draft a bill and submit it to the General Assembly for approval, according to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles website.State Sen. Tom Patton, R-Strongsville, has agreed to sponsor the plate. The society hopes to have the plates available by 2013, the 75th anniversary of Superman’s debut in Action Comics No. 1.The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has dozens of specialty plates, most of them costing up to $35 more than standard plates. They include colleges, professional sports, military and special interest groups from the American Red Cross to Eagle Scouts to bike and fishing enthusiasts.Organizations must sell 500 sets of plates per year or be dropped from the program.Paula Schleis can be reached at 330-996-3741 or pschleis@thebeaconjournal.com.
